15 Temmuz 2016'da Pensilvanya'dan Türk Silahlı Kuvvetlerinde bulunan takipçilerine verdiği emirle 16 Temmuz 2016 sabahına karşı Türkiye Cumhuriyeti hükumetini yıkmak için bir darbe girişiminde bulunduğu iddia edilir.[9][10] Gülen demokrasiden yana olduğunu söyleyerek[11] darbe girişiminin Cumhurbaşkanı Erdoğan ve çevresindekiler tarafından kurgulandığını iddia etti.[12] 18 Temmuz 2016'da Erdoğan, Gülen'in iadesini ABD'den resmen talep etti.[13][14] ABD makamları, Gülen aleyhinde yeterli delil olmadığı iddiası ve hâl böyleyken idam edilebileceği endişesiyle henüz bu başvuruya olumlu yanıt vermedi.[15]
