Addict with a Pen: This is another one of those songs by twenty one pilots where there is a main theme and interpretation of the song that a lot of people vision. There is no doubt it is about God and his faith but some people have found quite a few differences of the message he is trying to say, here is mine. This song to me is like a part 2 in his path to faith from No Phun Intended. In the first verse he says he hasn't been the best of sons meaning he hasn't been praying or attending church or communicating/connecting with God in a while, he has been traveling his mind to understand his dark parts and felt like since he was trying to get to the bottom of his mind and because he has been too depressed that it might not be okay to communicate with God but since then he realized that he needs God in his life, he hasn't found a drop of water and needs him to wash him which in Christianity means salvation or cleansing/renewing one's self. In verse two he is holding onto water which water in this song represents faith and he is straining to hold onto the last bit of it he has, the sand that is slowing him down can link back to the desert of his mind which is his bad thoughts and self doubt. So basically he has a small amount of faith in him that he needs/wants more of but he has these bad thoughts and deep questions that makes him lose more water. Whenever he thinks he can go further with the water in his hands and feels somewhat confident the sand will slow him down and his water will drain until next time. "And the waves of the water mean nothing to me" can be interpreted in several ways but I see it as two things. 1, that he means the water in his hands is his faith and the waves in the ocean is just water not faith or it could mean that he is holding onto his old faith and wanting to believe that way of thinking again without self questioning himself since when your young you don't think twice about your religion or what your taught until you grow older is when your faith will test you. 2, Although God is there he does not seek him because he is convinced that what he already has is enough. The beginning of verse 3 can just be passed through without a concern but when he says "I'm just being dramatic, in fact I'm only at it again" this to me seems like someone before has said your just being dramatic stop over thinking stuff and he noticed that and says he is only being dramatic he is at it again because he is now insecure about thinking stuff that can be perceived as overly dramatic so he just says "yeah just being dramatic". "As an addict with a Pen" meaning he is doomed to write about his struggles and struggles with religion which is what tøp songs are. He is addicted to writing overly dramatic situations it's a way of relieving stress and to just let go of what is happening in reality. It's easier to exaggerate with your writing than adding small details. "Who's addicted with the wind as it blows me back and forth" He keeps going back and forth from faith and doubt, he'll try to move one step forward in faith but the sand (doubt) will slow him down. "Mindless, spineless" Mindless as disconnecting his thoughts from his consciousness and emotions. Spineless, as disconnecting his brain from his body, living a redundant, numb life without faith. "Of course I'll be here again, see you tomorrow, but it's the end of today, end of my ways" Sounds like he knows he will start doubting his faith again but today (in the moment) he is going to try to hold onto faith again, end of his ways of doubting. "As a walking denial" he'll keep finding doubt in his faith, also could mean that everyone realizes he is depressed and told him he needed help but he denied it. "My trial was filed as a crazy suicide case, but you specialize in dying, you hear me screaming father and I'm lying here just crying, so wash me with your water" I feel like the crazy suicide case line is very powerful but unnoticed by people. I believe he is saying that his crazy suicidal case was him drowning metaphorically because he is trying really hard to believe in God that he is trying to drown in water (like I said before water can show Holy water/baptism/cleansing metaphor) but he is choking (struggling to believe) so he is screaming (begging) to God to wash him with HIS water, not the same water Tyler was trying to use. So basically this song means to me that Tyler has been out of sync with God for a while because he has been very doubtful and has been depressed for a while feeling like communicating with God at his time might not be the very best idea but after a while he realizes he needs God in his life he is becoming mindless, spinless person and is trying really hard to believe in God and his faith but he is doubtful so he is pleaing to God to wash him with his water.
