เนื่องจากความเข้มข้นในเนื้อหา ทั้งด้านอารมณ์ — รัก โลภ โกรธ หลง — และการตั้งคำถามต่อโครงสร้างทางชนชั้น ครอบครัว และบิดาผู้มีอำนาจ “จัน ดารา” จึงยืดเยื้ออยู่ในความทรงจำของผู้ชม และกลายเป็นหนึ่งในหนังไทยที่ถูกถกเถียงอย่างหนักถึง “คุณค่า” และ “ขอบเขต” ของศิลปะกับจริยธรรม

เรื่องราวเริ่มต้นด้วยหญิงสาวชื่อ “ดารา” — เธอถูกข่มขืน มีบุตร แล้วเสียชีวิตขณะคลอด พ่อของเธอเพื่อรักษาเกียรติยศ จึงให้ “หลวงวิสนันทเดชา” แต่งงานกับดาราในนาม เพื่ออุ้มชูบุตร คือ “จัน–จัญไร”

จันเติบโตมาในบ้านหลังนั้นโดยถูกความเกลียดชังดูหมิ่นเหยียดหยามจากบิดา และถูกทอดทิ้งทางอารมณ์ แต่มี “น้าวาด” — น้องสาวของดารา — ที่คอยเลี้ยงดูเขาไว้ แม้เธอจะถูกบิดาและสังคมกดดันอย่างหนักก็ตาม
