Bond is promoted to MI-6's "00" branch as agent 007, with a discretionary "license to kill", after assassinating corrupt MI-6 Section Chief Dryden (Malcolm Sinclair), who was selling state secrets, and his terrorist contact, Fisher (Darwin Shaw). The reboot series borrowed several details of Bond's early life originally created by Fleming, while incorporating geopolitical events that occurred in the 1990s and 2000s. The film’s mood is suffocating, all smoke-filled rooms, coded glances, secrets whispered into ashtrays. It’s not about action but attention, the thrill of watching intellect dismantle deceit.

He sets up a high stakes poker match in Montenegro for ten players, with entry fees at $10 million each plus a $5 million buy back should they lose all their money.
The film retained the top spot at the worldwide box office for four weeks. The film earned $167.4 million in the United States and Canada and $438.6 million from international territories, for a total of $606 million worldwide. It was the highest-grossing instalment of the James Bond series until Skyfall surpassed it in November 2012.
