Galenic Health and the Biopolitics of Flow Chapter 1 Community, Urban Health and Environment in the Late Medieval Low Countries
Historical portraits, including group portraits, served as a source of inspiration for the artists, residents, and organizations who participated in the project. Co-creation—meaning equal cooperation—among all partners was key in this project to jointly produce new portraits that would contribute to a more complete picture of society. During their search for diverse communities in the province, they collected extraordinary stories about historic dike villages, a creative family in Monnickendam and agricultural entrepreneurs.

In order for portraits from the 21st century to present an accurate reflection of our time, we need new faces. It will ensure that everyone is able to recognize themselves in the stories and faces shown in the museum. Together with the Frans Hals Museum we went into the province to co-create and to make and collect new portaits. The Faces of North Holland exhibition shows the untold stories from Aalsmeer to Texel.

Their travels and visits resulted in unique stories summarised in three multidisciplinary portraits. The outcome of these co-creation processes, including the portrait competition in which more than a thousand people participated, is now on view here. The vast majority of people never sat for a portrait, and they are not found in our museum collections, either. hier gepubliceerd was created in collaboration with the Frans Hals Museum and with support from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. In many large cities in Western Europe, the majority of inhabitants have a migratory background. Meanwhile, an increasing number of people live in social bubbles, where contact with others beyond their own circle remains limited at times.
Town governments were willing to invest major sums to improve safety and well-being and realized a program aimed at preserving flow. The creation and adaptation of complex infrastructures also stimulated further sanitary and maintenance routines. These required coordination concerning the division of responsibilities and tasks, and the policing of such arrangements.
Historical portraits exhibited in museums often depict the upper classes of the 16th and 17th century such as brewers, civic guards and regentesses. Our exhibition Faces of North Holland offers a look at the current residents of the Dutch province of North Holland. This exhibition showcases diversity in North Holland through portraits that have been created in partnership with various communities. Facesof North Holland is a collaborative project between Amsterdam Museum and Frans Hals Museum. Sierbestrating Haarlem want everybody to be able to relate to the faces and stories displayed at our museum. The results of this collaboration, and the winning entries to the portrait competition (picked by 22,000 voters from among 1,082 submissions) will be exhibited at Frans Hals Museum as of 4 April 2025. Historicizes the concept of public health in the context of the fourteenth- and fifteenth-century urban Low Countries. It begins by outlining how then-prevalent Galenic or humoural theories defined health, and how such ideas were employed by various Netherlandish governing bodies through a focus on spatial interventions. Analyses of street paving, water regimes, fire prevention, and military safety demonstrate how health interests involved mitigating communal risks through adaptations in the built environment. Preventative measures thus shaped cities’ morphology from the outset of urbanisation.
