The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s third book, stands as the supreme achievement of his career. This exemplary novel of the Jazz Age has been acclaimed by generations of readers. The story of the fabulously wealthy Jay Gatsby and his love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan, of lavish parties on Long Island at a time when The New York Times noted “gin was the national drink and sex the national obsession,” it is an exquisitely crafted tale of America in the 1920s.

in summer school, we studied this book, The Great Gatsby, and i absolutely adored it. i’ve never read classic novels such as this one, so i’m extremely glad i had. it’s very short, only 9 chapters, again, perfect for people who can’t sit through a million chapter book. F. Scott Fitzgerald used so many literary devices that bound together this story. it was beautifully written, everything in the story meant something, even an old clock that stopped working. Fitzgerald put so much thought into tying these important pieces together to build up a fantastic story line. i loved this novel, not only because it was interesting, but because i actually understood it. since this was written so long ago, approximately in the mid 1920s, some of the meanings are more difficult to understand, especially in today's time period. so just a warning to anyone who considers reading this, it might be hard to understand, and if you gotta use sparknotes or something, go ahead, because i did. i studied this novel in depth in class so nothing came across as confusing. i genuinely enjoyed this book and fully recommend it.

also, there have been numerous versions of the book cover, and the one i included actually has some meaning. not that the others don’t, i just find this one more precise. share your thoughts if you enjoyed this book!
