The Leaning tower of Pisa was just an eleventh century architectural mistake. If not for the miscalculations, the tower would just be known as simply "The Tower Pisa". While construction on the tower started in August of 1173, it was forced to a stop several times due to war, debt, and other various causes. All the while, builders worked on a logical strategy to decrease the lean. The tower was completed in the 13000. The Tower began to noticeably lean when the workers got to the third floor (1178). The purpose for the lean was because of the soft ground on which the Tower was built. It became clear that the Tower was falling, at two millimeters per year. The architect tried desperately to stop the lean by making the remaining levels smaller, but his plan didn't pan out. The leaning tower of Pisa was built as a bell tower for a local church, but the real architect behind the building remains unknown.
