Creating a Safe Workplace
Employee safety involves more than simply avoiding slipperiness in the breakroom; it is an overall commitment to ensuring employees can return safely home each shift. Companies who fail to invest in worker safety quickly develop a reputation as unsafe employers, hindering their ability to attract and retain top talent. Employee safety is essential component of any successful business irrespective of its industry or size.

Implementing a safe workplace begins with training. Be sure that new employees understand your company's safety expectations, including reporting hazards or witnessing risky conduct by coworkers, reporting them, and knowing what action to take if something unsafe occurs in their work area. Encourage employee participation in safety efforts by rewarding those who make an effort. Employees who feel personally invested in their safety will likely follow rules, keep an eye out for fellow workers, and speak out when conditions don't meet optimal conditions.

Ensuring employees can reach supervisors easily with health and safety issues can be achieved by assigning one safety supervisor per team and encouraging employees to contact this individual with any queries they have. Your organization should appoint someone to review employee feedback and take timely actions on issues related to workplace safety. In doing so, this person will demonstrate your organization is responsive to employee opinions while acting as a partner in workplace wellbeing. Preuse or prechange analyses for all equipment and processes can also help identify any potential hazards before they become problems, potentially helping employees identify risks that otherwise would go undetected on the job site. Conducting such analyses can reduce workplace accidents by helping employees recognize hidden dangers more readily than would otherwise be the case.
