In "The Devastation of the Indies: A Brief Account," a bias is clearly shown against both the Spanish Colonists and the Native people of the Americas and "New World." The article starts off by stating how when the Spaniards traveled from Old World to the Islands, they immediately began to make their mark by "killing, terrorizing, and torturing" the Natives. The source tells us that the Spanish would slaughter thousands of souls after being sold into slavery, and would search among islands for those who had escaped. This is true as the Spanish Colonists did in fact kill many of the Native peoples as they journeyed to the islands, but there may be a different meaning behind all of the death. The article says how the Colonists did all of the horrible and destructive deeds because of "glory from the lord" or searching for gold, but this is a very poor excuse for those inexplicable actions done by the Spanish. Also, this article was biased toward the Natives in a completely opposite way. The source uses words such as "weak and complaisant" to describe the Indians when the Spanish first arrived to their homeland. It also says how the Indians were known as "meek outcasts" and not very aware of what was going on in their surroundings. This is a very biased account of the Natives as they depict them for people that were just waiting for the Spanish to put them into slavery, steal all of their money and possessions, and eventually murder them. In fact, that was not quite the case as many Indians fought back to the Colonists, yet in the end were unsuccessful. They were faced with an overwhelming number of opponents as well as disease being spread from one race to another.
This source is not an ideal piece to use to describe the devastation of the Natives because of all the bias towards both sides in it. However, the article does give an opinionated gist upon the events that transpired in the New World, and gives a solid amount of information. All in all, the biased parts of the article do not hinder it from being a fine source to use.
