A TCW file is usually a TurboCAD for Windows drawing file. It is a native file format used by TurboCAD, a CAD software program used for creating technical drawings, floor plans, construction layouts, mechanical designs, furniture designs, and other 2D or 3D drafting projects. In simple terms, a TCW file is similar to a DWG file used in AutoCAD, except that TCW belongs mainly to TurboCAD for Windows.


A TCW file is not the same as a regular image or document file. It is not like a JPG, PNG, PDF, or DOCX file that can be easily opened by common apps. Instead, it is a working CAD file that may contain editable lines, shapes, dimensions, layers, text labels, symbols, measurements, and sometimes 3D model data. This means the file is meant to be opened in CAD software so the drawing can be viewed, edited, measured, printed, or exported.


The letters TCW are commonly understood to mean TurboCAD for Windows. This matters because TurboCAD has had different versions for different platforms, including Windows and Mac. The `.tcw` format is mainly associated with the Windows version of TurboCAD, so some other CAD programs may not open it directly. Even TurboCAD for Mac may not always handle TCW files the same way as TurboCAD for Windows.

DWG is the common AutoCAD drawing format, while DXF is a more general CAD exchange format supported by many CAD programs. This is usually the better workflow: open the TCW file in TurboCAD, export it as DWG or DXF, then open the exported file in the other CAD software.

If the TCW file contains a 3D model, DWG or DXF may not always preserve the full 3D information properly. In that case, it may be better to ask for a STEP/STP, IGES/IGS, or STL export, depending on what you need. STEP or STP is commonly used for 3D CAD models, IGES or IGS is another 3D exchange format, and STL is often used for 3D printing or basic mesh models.

One important thing to remember is that you should not simply rename a `.tcw` file to `.dwg`, `.dxf`, or any other extension. Renaming the file only changes the file name, not the actual internal format. For example, changing `drawing.tcw` to `drawing.dwg` does not convert it into an AutoCAD file. The file will still contain TurboCAD data, and other programs may fail to open it.

So, in plain terms, a TCW file is an editable TurboCAD drawing file, most commonly created by TurboCAD for Windows. If you need to open and edit it properly, use TurboCAD. If you only need to view it, ask for a PDF. If you need to work with it in another CAD program, ask for DWG or DXF. If it is a 3D file, ask for STEP, IGES, or STL depending on the purpose.
