Perkembangan
Musik a cappella berkembang sebagai musik religius Kristen. Lagu-lagu Gregorian biasanya dinyanyikan tanpa diiringi instrumen musik apapun. Orang Yahudi, nasrani, kristen, dan orang Muslim juga tidak mengiringi penyanyian lagu-lagu agamis dengan instrumen musik. Cara penyanyian ini dalam masyarakat Muslim disebut dengan istilah anashid atau nasyid.
