Türkiye’de, 29 Ekim 1923 tarihinde Cumhuriyet ilan edilmiştir; fakat aslında 23 Nisan 1920 tarihinden itibaren, Cumhuriyet yönetiminin alt yapısı atılmaya başlanmıştır.
23 Nisan 1920’de “egemenliğin kayıtsız şartsız ulusa ait olduğu” belirtilmiş ardından bu yeni düzenin kurulması için hızla çalışmalar yapılacaktır.
1922 yılında bu çalışmalar doğrultusunda Padişahlık ve Saltanatın hukuken kaldırılmıştır. Önce TBMM, 1 Kasım 1922 gecesi almış olduğu karar doğrultusunda, “Halifelik”le “Saltanatı” birbirinden ayırmış ve Saltanatı tamamen kaldırmıştır.
Halifeliğin kaldırılmasına daha vakit vardır. Bu süreçte Vahdettin İngiltere’ye sığındığı için yerine, Abdülmecit Halife olmuştur.
Cumhuriyet’in ilânı edilmesiyle artık halifeliğinde kaldırılması zamanı gelmiş ve bu yönde hazırlıklar başlatılmıştır. Ardından 3 Mart 1924 tarihinde de Halifelik tamamen kaldırılmıştır.
Bunlar Türkiye Cumhuriyetinin kaderini bağlayan aşamalardır.
Cumhuriyet yönetimi ile Türkiye Hukuk devleti statüsü kazanmıştır.
“Cumhuriyetçilik” Ne Anlama Gelir?
Devletin bir kişinin mutlak hakimiyeti çerçevesinde yönetilmemesi ve bu yönetimin hep bir ailenin nesillerinin elinde bulunmasına son veren; bunlar yerine halkın devlet yönetiminde söz hakkı sahibi olduğu bir ilkeye “cumhuriyetçilik” denir.
Atatürk, cumhuriyetçiliği,hükümdarlık ve saltanatı kaldırılmasında rol oynayan bir yönetim biçimi olarak nitelendirmemiş; Ülkeyi demokrasi ışığıyla aydınlatan bir anlayış olarak kabul etmiştir.
