Aristotle identified 4 different causes of change. - *Material cause. **That out of which change is produced. **Ex: Marble is the material cause of a statue. *Efficient cause. **That by which a change is produced or the engergy that is expended in change. **Ex: A sculptor is the efficient cause. *Formal cause. **The idea in the mind of the one who directs the work. **Ex: The image of the statue in the mind of the sculptor. *Final cause. **The purpose for which the work is performed. **Ex: The sculptor's desire to glorify God.

Rene Descartes (1596-1650) - *Descartes proposed to prove three things through his philosophy. **The immateriality of the soul. **The existance of God. **The existence of an extended universe. *His approach was to seek one firm truth (an axiom) upon which to build his truths.
Descartes' Methodic Doubt = Cogito Ergo Sum ->The evil genius -> mathematics -> the argument from dreams -> the argument from illusion -> the world, as known by the senses. Cogito Ergo Sum -> Innate ideas of perfection -> God -> Mathematics -> The world as known by mathematical physics.
