Hogwarts didirikan sekitar 990 sesudah Masehi oleh empat penyihir: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, dan Salazar Slytherin. Masing-masing dari mereka merepresentasikan sebuah aspek kepribadian yang mereka ingin munculkan dari murid-murid baru. Namun, tak lama setelah mendirikan sekolah tersebut, Slytherin memiliki pendapat yang berbeda mengenai status darah. Ia hanya ingin menerima para murid Pure-Blood dan merasa bahwa merekalah yang pantas untuk belajar sihir, tetapi ketiga pendiri lainnya tak setuju; terutama Gryffindor. Hal ini kemudian mengakibatkan Slytherin meninggalkan sekolah, tapi tidak sebelum ia membangun Kamar Rahasia secara diam-diam. Ketika keturunannya kembali ke Hogwarts, ia akan mampu membuka kamar tersebut dan membebaskan sebuah basilisk untuk memurnikan sekolah dari murid-murid kelahiran Muggle.
