We are more than half-way through the school year! One of the biggest highlights of this year that I’d like to point out is our Academic Awards Assembly. In case you missed it, over 200 students were recognized for making growth on i-Ready, increasing their GPA from 1st to 2nd quarter, Honor Roll, and other special recognitions. What an amazing site to see students celebrate themselves and each other in such a positive way. We also ran our RU Ready for i-Ready campaign. Students earned 1 raffle ticket for every point they went up on both the math and ELA tests. Let me tell you, what a motivation for students that was!! We had students make one-point growth to over 100 points in growth. 15 points is considered 1 year’s growth. Teachers worked to motivate students by getting them invested in their own growth. Teachers had students set real and attainable goals. Students turned in their raffle tickets for a drawing where we had over 40 donated gifts. Thank you to everyone who donated a prize! Students were so excited to hear their name called and to come select a prize. We didn’t stop there! You may have seen your students sporting an “I Rocked the i-Ready” wristband. Select students were given either a blue, yellow, or white wristband based on the number of points he/she earned.

Our eighth graders have completed their high school course registrations—yes, your babies are going to high school! If you have any questions about your student’s high school choices, please contact the high school counseling office. We do not have access to or control over high school course selections, other than of course providing information about students to help make the appropriate placement.
For seventh graders, be on the lookout for registration information. The counselors have talked to all the 7th graders to assist them in understanding their course options. We ask that you review your student’s selections. If you have questions, please contact the 7th grade counselor Idrissa Binta at [email protected] or 8th grade counselor Brian Upchurch at [email protected] via email or calling the main office.

In May, all of our students will be taking the Common Core-aligned test known as the SBA (for Smarter Balanced Assessment). Our teachers have been working for the last few years to align their instruction to these standards. Students took this test last year. It is important for students to take all assessments seriously. Not only does it give teachers excellent information on your child’s progress, the results are one criteria used for class placement. If you have any questions about Common Core or the Smarter Balanced Assessments, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Finally, as spring approaches and the weather warms, let me remind everyone of our Meridian dress code. All tops must cover the shoulder and shorts and skirts must reach fingertip length. For boys, pants must be worn at the hip (belts are good!) and shirts with cutout sleeves are not appropriate. Hats are not permitted on campus. As adults we all know that we have standards to adhere to for dress at work. It is helpful for students to learn how to dress appropriately for various occasions. Thank you for your support.
