"Sign Language"
Sign language atau yang sering disebut dengan bahasa isyarat adalah bahasa yang mengutamakan komunikasi manual, bahasa tubuh dan gerak bibir (tidak menggunakan suara).
Bahasa ini digunakan oleh mereka yang tidak bisa mendengar atau menderita tuna rungu. Dalam penerapannya, mereka mengombinasikan bentuk, orientas, dan gerak tangan serta tubuh. Dan, ekspresi wajah untuk membantu mengungkapkan pikiran mereka.
Tapi, belum ada bahasa isyarat internasional yang sukses diterapkan. Karena, bahasa isyarat disetiap negara berbeda-beda.
Di Indonesia, bahasa isyarat dibagi menjadi 2, yaitu :
- BISINDO yang menggunakan garakan 2 tangan.
- SIBI yang menggunakan abjad sebagai panduan bahasa isyarat (menggunakan 1 / 2 tangan sesuai dengan abjad).
Menurut Pheter Angdika (Peneliti lembaga bahasa Indonesia, di UI) , SIBI dikembangkan dari bahasa isyarat yang digagaskan / diterapkan di AS. Sedangkan BISINDO merupakan penyesuaian dari bahasa isyarat Amerika, yang tentu dengan beberapa variasi yang berlaku disetiap daerah.
