The original reason why we settled on this bike last year was because of its excellent specifications and specifically the Shimano Nexus 8 Revo-Shift internally geared transmission it offered. Internally geared transmissions are smoother and much more reliable (and more expensive) than conventional derailleur transmissions. They require far less maintenance and degrade slower as they're sealed from the elements which makes them great for the Calgary climate. The 8 speed unit found on this bike is the highest end model made by Shimano and it offers all the flexibility you'd need in the city. I feel these systems are often under appreciated likely due to the relatively small number of gears it offers compared to derailleur systems, however, in practice they're significantly more functional.
