2. The Four Basic Financial Statements
To provide a complete picture of a company's health, you need these four:
* Balance Sheet: Shows the financial position (Assets, Liabilities, and Equity) at a specific point in time.
* Income Statement: Reports revenues and expenses over a specific period to show net profit or loss.
* Statement of Cash Flows: Details how cash enters and leaves the company through operating, investing, and financing activities.
* Statement of Retained Earnings (or Shareholders' Equity): Shows changes in equity over time, including dividends paid and profits kept.
3. Actual Examples of a Company
You can choose a well-known company like Apple Inc. or Microsoft for your examples:
* Balance Sheet: Apple’s massive cash reserves vs. their long-term debt.
* Income Statement: Their total iPhone sales revenue minus the cost of manufacturing.
* Cash Flow: How much cash they spent on Research & Development (R&D) this year.
* Retained Earnings: How much profit they reinvested into the company versus what they paid out as dividends to shareholders.
4. Importance of Financial Statements
Why do we bother with all this paperwork?
* Decision Making: Helps management decide whether to expand or cut costs.
* Investment: Investors use them to see if a company is profitable and worth their money.
* Creditworthiness: Banks check these to decide if a company can handle a loan.
