Don't despair. Programming can be challenging at first but in my experience, the key is to not overstrain in any particular concept or exercise. I guarantee you that if you let a problem rest and restart it from scratch, you'll eventually have that aha moment were everything clicks.
Perhaps more importantly, try breaking every problem into manageable chunks. For example, in order to solve this exercise, a good first step might be to identify the starting points (index number) of alphabetically ordered characters. Then once you have those, you can print them out as letters and do a manual check to see if the computer is doing what you expect. Once you get that part right, you can work on finding end points and in this manner print the corresponding strings by doing some basic math (end - start point + 1). Lastly, do some logic to compare string lengths and print the desired answer.
As you see, if you work on little chunks you can do bit-size pieces that are easier to understand and keep you moving in the right direction.
