Younger Futhark pertama kali ditemukan di Denmark dan lebih dikenal dengan 'Danish Rune' atau 'Long Branch Rune'.
Pada akhir abad ke-8 seorang Rune-master yang tidak diketahui namanya merubah Elder Futhark menjadi 16 huruf Rune.
Pada abad ke-10 penulisan Rune yang 'dimodifikasi' diterima oleh masyarakat Skandinavia. Dan alfabet Rune baru ini dikenal dengan Younger Futhark.
Younger Futhark terbagi menjadi tiga yaitu Long Branch (Danish) Rune Short Twig (Swedish-Norwegian) Rune, dan Staveless (Hälsinge) Rune.
Masing-masing Rune digunakan di tempat yang berbeda. Long Branch digunakan oleh orang Denmark, Short Twig oleh orang Swedia dan Norwegia dan Staveless digunakan oleh orang Hälsinge yang merupakan bagian dari negara Swedia.
Selain tulisan, bahasa lisan yang digunakan pada periode tersebut mengalami perubahan yang serius.
