DEFINITION OF ε-NFA
An epsilon NFA (ε-NFA) is a nondeterministic finite automaton that allows for transitions between states without consuming any input symbol, using an epsilon (ε) transition. This makes it a more flexible model than a standard NFA because it can move from one state to another instantaneously, which is particularly useful for constructing automata from regular expressions.

Equivalence to NFA:
Despite the extra power, an ε-NFA has the same recognizing power as a standard NFA. Any ε-NFA can be converted into an equivalent NFA without epsilon transitions.

Thompson's Construction
The idea is to recursively break down the regular expression into smaller sub-expressions and build ε-NFAs for them, then combine them using ε-transitions according to the operators used.

Why This Conversion Matters
It proves that any regular expression can be converted to an ε-NFA
It's the first step in converting regular expressions to DFAs (RE → ε-NFA → NFA → DFA)
It's used in lexical analyzer generators like Lex and Flex
