Meski baru abad XVIII kisah tentang manusia serigala diterbitkan, bukan berarti orang berkurang minat terhadap manusia serigala. Justru kepercayaan itu demikian kuat, bahkan sering diterima sebagai kebenaran, bukan fiksi.
Menurut kepercayaan lama ada tiga macam manusia serigala. Pertama, yang memperolah kemampuan itu melalui keturunan. Konon, kutukan terhadap nenek moyang menjadikan setiap keturunannya menjadi manusia serigala. Kedua, orang yang dengan sukarela jadi serigala dengan alasan dan tujuan jahat. Sedangkan yang terakhir adalah manusia serigala berhati lembut dan baik. Kondisinya yang tidak lazim, malah membuatnya merasa malu.
