Electricity kills. It kills silently, instantly, and without warning. If you work around energized circuits, your boots are part of your protection system—and understanding what those ratings mean can keep you alive.
Electrical Hazard (EH) rated boots provide a secondary source of protection against electric shock. The key word is secondary. EH boots reduce the hazard; they don't eliminate it. The rating applies to the sole construction specifically, not the entire boot.
EH-rated boots are tested to withstand 18,000 volts at 60 hertz for one minute with no current leakage exceeding 1.0 milliamperes under dry conditions. That's the ASTM F2413-18 standard. Notice the conditions: dry. Wet boots, wet floors, or conductive materials on the sole compromise protection. EH rating doesn't make you invincible.
Static Dissipative (SD) boots are different. They allow static electricity to flow through the boot to ground, preventing buildup that could ignite flammable materials or damage sensitive electronics. SD boots have a much lower resistance—between 10^6 and 10^8 ohms. They're for different hazards than EH boots.
Conductive boots are the opposite of EH. They allow electricity to flow freely, grounding the wearer immediately. These are for specific applications like munitions handling where static discharge is more dangerous than electrical contact.
Steel toes complicate EH protection. Steel conducts electricity, so steel toe boots must have additional insulation in the sole to maintain EH rating. Composite toes don't conduct, making them naturally better for electrical work—though they still need EH-rated soles for full protection.
Inspect your boots. EH protection degrades with wear. Holes, worn soles, or metal embedded in the tread create conductive paths. If you've stepped on a nail or screw, that boot is no longer EH rated until inspected and repaired.
