The Myth of the Hero Teacher


Maybe you know of those stories where teachers change the lives of students. Ed Boland wanted to be one of those teachers who can change the lives of kids so he got a job at a high school. The school's pay is bad but that's the "fantasy" teachers " fantasy.


Now, Ed Boland really wanted to help students so he took a step further and volunteered for Prep for Prep which is a program the doesn't pay.


On Mr. Boland 5th of teaching, he changed his mind. He described the new memoirs to, "The Battle for Room 314: My Year of Hope and Despair in a New York City High School." The students made it quite obvious that he was wrong in trying to be a "fantasy" teacher.


During class, someone threw a calculator across the room and it hit the board, a group of boys were shoving each other near the new laptops, Two girls were sharing earphones, listening to an iPod, which is banned, another girl was reading 'Thug Luv 2' as if she was on a cruise. Then Mr. Boland found the girl who started the mess.


In Dr. Emdin's perspective, he sees it wrong for Mr. Boland to blame the kids for the failure of being a good teacher. He says that it is especially wrong for him to blame the students because he worked in a different background.


Dr. Edmin claims that teaching minority kids need a certain skill that you develop. He claims that Ed Boland isn't trained for it. Mr. Boland agreed on that part of Dr. Edmin's claim.


Boland wanted to quit, but Prep for Prep wanted him back. He reluctantly came bak and made a poor girl get her college degree and a part time job although at her job, she was treated unkind. That made Boland disappointed. He said," and that was suppose to be my success story. He was on the verge of tears. He was very sad that his successor was being bullied around.
