Air Catcher: Okay so a lot of people came to the conclusion that this song is about Tyler falling in love which is really easy to fit together but Tyler said that Tear in my Heart is the only love song he has ever written, although the song Prove Me Wrong from No Phun Intended would prove Tyler wrong but that was really Tyler not twenty one pilots. So taking that information I dug deeper and tried to find a different meaning, I did. I believe this song is about Tyler being addicted to the dark parts, thinking it's the only way and easier way to stay negative than bring yourself up which from known experiences is the truest thing ever. I also feel like he is contemplating whether he thinks him staying negative is going to change anything at all. Alrighty, I find it easier going lyric by lyric so let's go! "I don't fall slow like I use to, I fall straight down, You've stolen my air catcher, That kept me safe and sound. My parachutes would guide me, Safely to ground, But now my chord's not working, And I see you starring me down." When he says I dont fall slow like I used to, I fall straight down I think that means before he used to give into his dark thoughts slowly but strong enough to say no but now he gives into it way too easily. (Dark thoughts= Anxiety, Suicide, self Harming, the big questions, etc.). I believe air catcher is a metaphor for something that would distract him from his dark thoughts or something happened in his life where he has to rely on something or someone and now it's gone, he isn't secured anymore. The parachute is also the thing that would distract him or him relying on that person or object. He did a little word play and instead of cord it is chord. I believe he said chord because he plays the piano and now something in him thinks the chord isn't helping him, meaning he doesn't have motivation to create music or listen to music anymore because he gets too deep into his thoughts or something happened where music cant help him any more. Now he is becoming vulnerable since his dark thoughts are starring him down. Or this could mean that he is vulnerable with his dark thoughts and feels like everyone is staring him down, watching him, which resembles anxiety. "I won't fall in love with falling, I will try to avoid those eyes" He is saying he won't fall in love with falling, falling is the dark, negative, no good failure thoughts you get when you are depressed and he is saying "I'm not going to think this way, I won't let these thoughts become my way of thinking, I won't kneel to these concepts" ;) The "I will try to avoid those eyes" reference make to the "I see you starring me down" in the last verse which (like I said before) represents his dark thoughts/blurryface or he thinks people around him are starring at him, judging him and he is saying I will try to avoid those thoughts, or people's judgement. Whenever I reference the eyes or starring me down part I am always between the two. Whether he is saying the eyes are people around him thinking that they are judging him, or if the eyes represent the dark thoughts or blurryface. I think I'm leaning more on the dark side concept but it's whatever you want it to be. "I think you would beat the moon in a pretty contest, and the moon just happened to be the very first thing that I missed." I get one of two things reading this. 1, First of all I think the moon represents hope/help from people who actually love him. Second I think that his dark thoughts are more attractive or louring to him than the moon but maybe if he looked longer at the moon he would find hope but a, he either ignores it or b, he doesn't realize the moon is trying to help him. 2, The moon is what comforts him at night and helps him fight through. He is saying here that the dark thoughts is getting to him more and more and the moon can't help this time, also knowing that the dark thoughts are more effective than the moon and tonight he missed seeing what could've helped him. "I was doing fine on my own and there wasn't much I lacked, but you've stolen my air catcher and I don't know if I want it back." Here he is saying he was fine being happy or at least not suffering any pain and now his bad part of his mind stole his air catcher and after a while he got used to the thoughts and doesn't know if he wants the air catcher back. Just to clarify I already explained what I thought air catcher means and I'm just going to refer to my thinking as air catcher. "Cause I'm not sure I want to give you tools that can destroy my heart." So we know his dark part of his mind is trying to take control of him total, whether the thoughts are succeeding or not is the moral dilemma of the song. I think the dark parts succeeded majority of his mind/thoughts but there is still a little bit of his true self holding back and trying but failing or just giving up on getting rid of his thoughts but not falling all the way down (if that makes sense, sorry). This song is a battle between his mind, or if you were to put it in a 2015 phase; a battle between him and blurryface. The good in his mind does not want to give up and let his dark thoughts consume him total. His heart lies the true, happy self of him and he doesn't know if he wants to try and not let the dark thoughts take advantage or just to give up on everything. "And I just don't say what you want to hear so I'll write my fears, and I don't believe in talking just to breathe, in falling selfishly." This is the good part saying he is not giving the upper advantage to the dark part of his thoughts so he is going to write down some lyrics to help him, seems what Tyler would most likely do. And remember earlier in the song where his chord's was not working and they were starring him down? Is he getting the upper hand perhaps? I feel like the talking just to breath part says 2 things. 1, (this part without singing) that he is doubting himself again, saying he doesn't want to breathe (live) just to talk about his problems, which would lead to the next line. 2, (this part with singing) That he doesn't want to just talk and breathe, he wants to sing and express his pain, which would lead back to the last line "writing his fears." The falling selfishly part could represent him falling into his dark thoughts and thinking that it is selfish and doesn't need help or people to worry over and tries to brush it off, thinking it's not a big deal. I have another thought that maybe he is saying falling selfishly because he wants to write music and express his creativity but his thoughts are getting the best of him and feeling like it is selfish of him to get all depressed when he can help others with his music and again, tries to brush it off. "But now, I'm here to give you words as tools that can destroy my heart." Remember when he said he didn't know if he wanted to destroy his heart? That it was the moral dilemma of the song? Well I think he chose the negative outcome. Now he has been defeated by these thoughts (almost wrote concepts because of lane boy) and is giving permission for his thoughts to destroy his heart (his true, happy, free self). The words could mean his actual thoughts and doubts that flood his mind and consumes him in negativity going to his heart where he answers the heartfelt questions and decisions which is now going to be destroyed by his mind. Alright ALRIGHT! Done! Basically just to sum up this piece of junk, I think the song air catcher means Tyler fighting against his bad thoughts or blurryface and gets defeated by blurryface or consumed in these thoughts at the end but feeling like he doesn't want other people to know and help him and doesn't want to be consumed all the way by these thoughts so he can still write his fears. Which is a following theme in twenty one pilots song's.
