(The Flex Straw Cap was fiddly to use and tended to leak lightly, so if you want a straw pick you might prefer the Owala bottle.) But we prefer the Flex Chug Cap for its simplicity and coverage. Most Hydro Flask caps are made of plastic and all are BPA-free. We haven’t had any issues throughout our testing, but it’s something to be aware of if your bottle starts developing a leak.
Both of these options perform well in terms of keeping beverages insulated and they are easy to drink out of. You can find insulated bottles that won’t break the bank in the $15-25 range. At their most basic, insulated bottles are sleek cylinders, which aren’t the most stable. But, there are also lids that incorporate straws, flip closures, and even magnets. Keeping insulated bottles clean is also important to limit any off-tastes. Metal bottles can sometimes impart a metallic taste to water, often after being left for a long period of time.
The brand’s medium size, the Mover 18-ounce bottle ($48), has a convenient sipping cap. The whole affair is protected by a stout flip-top lid, and in testing, we really enjoyed drinking from this bottle. One of the best features is that it is leak-proof and spill-proof, and the bottle is dishwasher-safe for easy cleaning.
The crux of this entire article might as well be, in many cases, “What is the best water bottle lid? Every issue with a water bottle, beyond superficial dents and damage, starts with the lid. All insulated metal water-bottle bodies are generally exceptionally good at what they do, which is keep water cold. Regardless of any closely held opinions, the best water bottle you have—especially when you’re thirsty—is the one in your hand. After several years of testing and various debates, even within Wirecutter staff, it’s very clear there is no single best water bottle for everyone. We removed the BrüMate Rotera as a pick; after problems with its lid arose (it’s always the lids!), Water bottles appears to have been discontinued.
Heat energy needs mass to travel through, so by removing the air in between the two layers of the bottle, the liquid inside is able to retain its temperature for longer. Colors are mainly just a preference but can also help identify your bottle in a crowd. You’ll want to know how good the insulation is, especially if you live in a hotter climate. Or, get one with a built-in water filter like the LifeStraw Go and you won’t have to worry about it. The lid functions to seal in carbonation and freshness; you wouldn’t need this for your daily beverages. This insulated container is designed specifically for storing carbonated beverages like beer or kombucha.
You want a bottle that’s safe and lasts, so check the material composition first—glass, stainless steel, or ceramic each bring their own perks. If your bottle is not dishwasher-safe, it can be cleaned with hot water, a little dish soap, and a thorough rinsing. A good thermos can keep hot food at a safe temperature for hours — an excellent counterpart to an insulated bottle! All of the bottles on this list will do a great job at keeping your hot liquids hot and your cold liquids cold for impressively long periods.
A durable build matters, but even the toughest bottle falls short if it’s a hassle to clean. Don’t overlook the lid—secure screw, flip, or chug caps with protective bumpers prevent leaks and reduce stress at weak points. Bottles made from 304 or 18/8 stainless steel won’t corrode and stay BPA-free, ensuring long-term use and safety. Why do some bottles withstand drops and dings while others dent or crack? But it’s not just the walls that matter—your lid choice plays a role too.
If you’re okay with that, you may like this bottle. You can’t drink out of it while walking, its attached cap gets in your face, and it doesn’t fit in a cup holder or a backpack pocket. Our big concern is that this bottle doesn’t roll down particularly small, so it’s up to you to decide whether the tiny space savings are worth paying for. If you must have a travel bottle, this one is the easiest to fill and drink from. It has stood the test of time, whereas other travel bottles we tested have sprung leaks.
The Purifyou bottle is made of borosilicate glass, and that makes it special. We tested and liked the dimensions of the 22-ounce bottle, though it won’t fit in many cup holders since the base is 3.25 inches wide. The downside is that the Purifyou bottle—unlike our insulated picks—is too narrow to accommodate ice cubes. We also like the small mouth on this bottle, specifically.
The lids on insulated water bottles focus on hydration, with straws like the Stanley Quencher H2.0 Flowstate Tumbler or open tops like the Hydro Flask Wide Mouth. Many insulated water bottles are dishwasher safe, and others can be easily cleaned with dish soap and hot water. Generally, it is safe to fill insulated water bottles with contents other than water. When it comes to insulated water bottles, it’s tough to imagine anything new under the sun.
It’s triple vacuum insulated to keep your water cold for 24 hours (a.k.a. the amount of time you may need to drink up). (While we clearly love a fancy water bottle, the fact that so many of them require two hands to unscrew the top can be a real drag when you’re exercising.) It’s also big enough to fit most filtration devices, so you can ensure your water is safe to drink when you’re on the go. And while you’re drinking, a magnet in the cap keeps it attached to the side of the bottle. Whether you prefer a glass water bottle because it preserves the water’s taste (without adding any metallic or chemical hint) or you simply like the sleek look, the Purifyou Premium glass water bottle is a winner. The double-walled vacuum insulation will keep hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold, and you might even forget you’re holding it thanks to the comfort-grip handle.
It’s a lightweight bottle that keeps liquids piping hot and is thoroughly leakproof. If you are looking for a bottle with smaller volume, you may want to go with the 26-ounce YETI Rambler or 32-ounce Owala FreeSip. They also feature a coating that improves durability and keep beverages cold (or hot) for an impressive amount of time. These bottles are an investment but totally worth it, especially if (like us) you spend lots of time outside.
Beyond the standard water bottle, this list also includes tumblers, can coolers, and growlers. We then put them through the wringer and pulled together the best of the best insulated bottles you see here. Contributor Katie Griffith originally sought an insulated bottle so she could sip on a liter of hot chocolate during an ice climbing trip. When you work and play in extreme environments, the benefits of keeping hot water hot and cold water cold start to click. Though the capacity is a fairly small 12 ounces, it’s the perfect size for small hands. The 12-ounce Thermos Funtainer ($20) from Thermos is a durable, safe, and affordable bottle designed for kids of all ages.
Please note that weekends and public holidays may slightly delay delivery. Water bottle deliveries are restricted to Colombo and its suburbs.
Because it’s a straw bottle, you’re limited to only using cold liquids in it. We don’t have too many straw-drinking lids in our review, but this bottle executed it perfectly. The FreeSip is high on our list of best water bottles on the market today. It’s etched on the side with time markings meant to guide you to drink two full bottles throughout the day, adding up to 64 ounces of water. The water bottle also easily fits ice cubes, is safe to wash in a dishwasher’s top rack, and is super lightweight at 3.5 ounces.
Also, the Sway bottle is tapered at the bottom, so it fits in car cup holders more naturally than the original. The Sway locks with a very effective physical lever that “blocks” the lid from opening. The 30-ounce Owala FreeSip Sway, designed around simple, one-handed operation, is great for people who find themselves constantly multitasking. (A new lid costs $10.) We haven’t reproduced that flaw ourselves, but we’re watching to see if we hear of this issue more often. But one of our long term testers found that the gasket on her bottle developed mold no matter how deeply she cleaned it. In one way this is what makes the bottle so reliable.
