Our 6th grade teachers have been working hard to assess their students current math levels for the purpose of tailoring their curriculum to their classes this year. Those assessments show that your student has had some exposure to 7th grade material. As you are probably aware, we have a strong differentiated curriculum in our 6th grade classrooms. As a result, we do not ever place a 6th grade student into a 7th grade math class. On rare occasions, we do find a 6th grade student who is ready for our 8th grade Algebra class. Since your student has shown some exposure to 7th grade material, your student is welcome to attempt the Math 7A Mastery test. The Math7A Mastery test is designed to determine if a student has fully mastered 7th grade material in such a way that they are mathematically ready to move into 8th grade Algebra. Please understand that our quick assessment was not detailed enough for us to know whether or not your student has fully mastered 7th grade material. It is not common for students to pass the Math 7A Mastery test, but we do find students who do.

The test will be administered on Monday, August 29th during 1st and 2nd periods. Students will be excused from their 6th grade classrooms but will be responsible for any material that they miss. Should your child pass this test, I will reach out for a face to face meeting to discuss the potential placement into Algebra 8. Any student who does pass this test and skips into 8th grade Algebra will need to maintain a grade of an A in the Algebra class. If they fall below that mark, they will be returned to the 6th grade classroom. Should your student attempt and not pass the test it just indicates that there are standards in 6th/7th grade that your student has yet to master (which is ok since they are in 6th grade!)

There is no requirement for your student to attempt this test. There will be an opportunity to skip 7th grade at the end of the 6th grade year as well.
