Hi Mrs .Breedlove,
Thank you for your email and thank you and Mrs LeCroy for giving me the opportunity to come and observe Sami in Mrs.Scott's class. I also greatly appreciated Mrs.Isaac's help. I completely agree with what you mentioned in your email and apologize that I shared my concerns with Mrs .Shade before communicating with the IEP team first. I was planning to send an email to the IEP team but didn't get a chance to do so.
When I observed Sami on Tuesday, he sat on his chair for about 20 minutes, which I thought was pretty good. He answered a few questions that Mrs .Scott asked and was working on his assignment with the help of Mrs.Shade. After about 20 minutes, he started running around the carpet. I didn't see a break card on his desk and that is why I asked if he has access to a break card in different classes .We have previously discussed looking for clues and trying to prevent behavior rather than waiting until it happens .He was smacking his lips and sticking his tongue out and wiggling on his chair before he started running on the carpet .Mrs.Shade was doing a good job helping him to finish his classwork but apparently she didn't notice the signs and clues showing that he needed to move . He then had to quickly transition to Mrs. Breedlove's class ,I didn't see that he was warned or shown a picture schedule to show him the next transition. He had a hard time transitioning to the carpet at Mrs Breedlove's class and I felt that he was overwhelmed by the quick transition and the demand and expectations for him to sit for another 30 minutes .
When I dropped Sami off yesterday ,I briefly discussed my observations with Mrs.Shade and suggested to her to look for signs and clues when he needs to move. I also told her that he may need to get up and walk around his table every 15-20 minutes before he start running around the carpet or acting out. I didn't say to walk him around the carpet because that will obviously disturb the rest of the class and didn't say every 10 minutes because obviously he will not got any work done if he moves every 10 minutes.
I believe that Mrs.Shade has a great heart and really wants to help Sami but I just wanted to share my observations during only 30-35 minutes which may not reflect the whole day. As I said during the IEP meetings,I think that we have a good team and strategies planned bu we need to make sure that it is being implemented consistently by all people involved including the designated adult .
