Hurricane Matthew
Originating from a tropical wave that emerged off Africa on September 22, Matthew developed into a strong tropical storm upon approaching the Windward Islands on September 28. A period of explosive intensification ensued as the cyclone tracked across the Caribbean Sea; Matthew became a hurricane on September 29 and reached Category 5 intensity the following day at a record-low latitude. Only slight weakening followed as Matthew curved slowly towards the north, remaining a strong Category 4 hurricane; early on October 4, Matthew made landfall on the Tiburon Peninsula of Haiti

Even one week after the powerful storm first made landfall in southwestern Haiti, some communities have still not received any support. Authorities there reported at least 900 deaths due to the hurricane.
Haiti now faces a humanitarian crisis with hundreds of thousands of residents in need of aid, housing, and medical attention, as a growing cholera outbreak threatens to make the situation even worse.

As the category 4 hurricane moved slowly northward from Haiti and Cuba to Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas, it reached sustained winds of 160 mph which made it a category 5 hurricane. Furthermore, the rising sea levels meant Matthew’s storm surge was higher and the flooding was more severe.

In America, On October 3, the governors of Florida and North Carolina declared a state of emergency.[69][70] The next day, a South Carolina governor recommended an evacuation for those residents living within one hundred miles of the coast.
October 4, North Carolina Governor had ordered that evacuation be mandatory. On October 6,  Barack Obamadeclared a federal state of emergency for Florida,[82] later extending to include Georgia and South Carolina.[83]

On October 6, Florida's governor urged over 1.5 million people to evacuate, with Hurricane Matthew expected to make landfall by the evening of that day

When the hurricane reached the US, 33 people lost their lives as Matthew crashed ashore while floods cut power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses. In the part of the Atlantic that Hurricane Matthew was in was about 1.8 to 2.7 degrees warmer than the normal temperature. This near record high ocean temperatures contributed to the torrential rainfall and the flash flooding from the storm, particularly in the Carolinas. For example floods in the Tar Heel State destroyed 7,000 homes and left more than 2,000 people in need of rescue. The hurricane proved immensely destructive as it robbed numerous people of their lives and homes.
