The Ku klux klan for example rose in power and influence during this time, reflecting what some white people thought of immigrants, Jews, Catholics, and African Americans migrating north (unrelated, but the modern KKK has a white pride internet tv show and radio so there's that) and member numbers even grew to 3 million (that's about half the population of Houston today!!) White protestants got really worried about their social status in America as more and more immigrants came in, especially those who were Jewish or Catholic.
Immigrants were kind of generally looked down upon anyway, with even the government controlling the number of immigrants let in with quotas based on national origin.
This exclusion of immigrants, particularly Asian immigrants, came from a fear of anarchists and "scientific facts" about race that essentially placed white people at the top and colored people in varying rungs below.
