The first telephone was such a hit he repeated his first phrase on the telephone at the 1915 formal opening of the transcontinental telephone lines going to the east and west coasts. Bell then picked up the phone in NY and said "Mr. Watson, come here, I want you." Watson then replied that it would take him a week because he was in San Francisco.
In 1876 Bell was the first to be granted a US patent for a device that produced early intelligible replication of the human voice. This was further developed by many others.
