Dementor adalah penjaga penjara Azkaban. Kabarnya, tidak ada yang mengetahui bentuk asli Dementor karena tertutup dengan jubah.
Dementor mengkonsumsi kebahagiaan manusia, pencipta suasana dingin, penderita kegelapan, dan putus asa. Dementor dirancang untuk menyerap kebahagiaan dan harap tawanan untuk mencegah tawanan melarikan diri.
Hanya penyihiri yang dapat melihat dementor. Muggle hanya dapat merasakannya.
Dementor juga memiliki kemampuan yang disebut "Dementor's Kiss" yang berguna untuk menghisap jiwa melalui mulut. Sehingga sang pemilik jiwa itu seperti tempurung kosong atau yang lebih parah mati.
Satu-satunya mantra yang dapat mengusir Dementor adalah Patronus. Namun, Snape menganggap pernyataan tersebut salah.
Menurut catatan, Dementor ada yang menjadi pengikut Voldemort dan ada pula yang menjadi pengikut Penyihir Baik.
Saya suka dengan Dementor karena mereka unik. Mereka ditakuti oleh orang-orang padahal bentuknya biasa saja. Mereka dapat melumpuhkan targetnya dengan melakukan Dementor's Kiss. Saya rasa penjara di dunia ini perlu Dementor, tetapi Dementor yang lebih baik.ő
