Solving real-world problems is manageable if you have a plan. A problem-solving plan helps you understand and organize the information in the problem statement and provides you with a blueprint for solving the problem.
Here are the steps for solving a real-world problem:
Step 1. Identify.
Step 2. Strategize.
Step 3: Set Up.
Step 4: Solve.
Step 5: Check.
Problem-Solving Plan
Step 1. Identify: Read the problem carefully. Identify the unknown information that the problem is asking you to find, as well as any other unknown or known information.
Step 2. Strategize: Write a statement that models the relationship between the knowns and the unknowns in the problem. Choose variables or variable expressions to represent the unknowns in your model.
Step 3. Set Up: Translate your statement into an equation. Substitute known values, variables, and variable expressions into the equation.
Step 4. Solve: Solve the equation. Answer the question the problem is asking.
Step 5. Check: Reread the problem. Check that your solution answers the question being asked and that it makes sense with the given information.
