3. Classical Greece: Beauty, Proportion, and the Human Form

Ancient Greek art marks a decisive turn in the history of visual culture: the move toward naturalism and the idealization of the human body. Between roughly 500 and 300 BCE — the Classical period — Greek sculptors pursued a standard of perfection rooted in mathematical proportion. Polykleitos wrote a treatise, the Canon, establishing ideal ratios for the human figure, which he demonstrated in his sculpture Doryphoros (the Spear-Bearer). The contrapposto stance — weight shifted onto one leg, the body subtly twisted — gave figures a sense of life and movement that earlier, more rigid forms lacked. Greek pottery, too, evolved from geometric patterns toward narrative figural scenes, depicting myths, athletic competitions, and daily life in extraordinary detail. The Parthenon on the Athenian Acropolis remains the period's greatest architectural achievement, its sculptures — many now controversially held in the British Museum — once painted in vivid color. For the Greeks, beauty and virtue were linked: kalos k'agathos, meaning "beautiful and good," described the ideal citizen. Art was not merely decoration but a civic and philosophical exercise, reflecting the belief that harmony in form corresponded to harmony in society and in the cosmos.
