Is a BA Communication Design Degree the Right Path for You?

Creative careers are often misunderstood. People outside the industry assume they're less rigorous or less structured than more traditional academic routes. The reality is that a BA Communication Design is a demanding, technically layered qualification that prepares graduates for a wide range of roles across the design, media, and communications industries.
The degree covers more ground than most people expect. Yes, you'll work with typography, layout, colour, and visual composition — but you'll also engage with branding strategy, digital media, user experience thinking, print production, and the theory behind visual communication. By the time you complete the qualification, you're not just someone who can make things look good. You understand why certain design decisions work, how audiences respond to visual information, and how to communicate complex ideas through structured visual language.
South Africa's creative economy is genuinely active. Advertising agencies, design studios, in-house marketing teams, publishing houses, digital agencies, and media companies all hire communication design graduates. The skills you develop are applicable across sectors, which gives you flexibility when you enter the job market.
That said, the qualification alone doesn't build a career — your portfolio does. This is something worth understanding before you start. From your first year, you should be building and curating work that demonstrates your thinking, not just your execution. Employers in creative fields hire based on what they see, not just what's on your transcript.
Choosing the right institution matters more than people acknowledge. Facilities, software access, industry connections, and the calibre of your lecturers all shape the quality of what you produce and who you know when you graduate. Visit campuses, speak to current students, and look at the work previous graduates have gone on to produce.
The field is competitive, but it rewards people who develop a genuine point of view. Designers who can think strategically, communicate clearly with clients, and execute to a professional standard are not in oversupply.
