Crochet Bag have a pile of old t-shirts in your closet. They are stained, faded, or just unwearable. Do not throw them away. Do not donate them. Cut them up. You are going to turn that textile waste into the coolest crochet bag on your block. This is the art of "tarn" (t-shirt yarn) crochet.
Tarn is the ultimate upcycling material. It is free, abundant, and creates a crochet bag with incredible properties. Tarn bags are soft, durable, machine washable, and have a satisfying, chunky weight. Plus, because t-shirts are knit, the resulting bag has a slight, natural stretch that returns to shape. Best of all? You do not need to buy anything.
Step 1: Making the Tarn.
Lay a t-shirt flat. Cut off the hem and the sleeves directly under the armhole. You are left with a tube. Now, cut 1-inch-wide strips horizontally across the tube, but stop 1 inch before you cut through the side seam. You will create a fringe. Open the shirt. You will see a continuous, spiraling strip. Pull it gently—the fabric will curl into a "yarn." Wind it into a ball. Three to four t-shirts make one medium-sized crochet bag.
Step 2: Choosing a Hook.
Tarn is thick. You need a large hook. A 10mm, 12mm, or even 15mm hook works best. If you do not have one, wooden dowels sanded smooth or even your fingers can work. The goal is to crochet loosely so the thick tarn can move.
Step 3: The Simple Pattern.
Because tarn is bulky, a complex crochet bag pattern is unnecessary. A simple rectangle is perfect.
Chain 15 stitches.
Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and across. (14 stitches)
Chain 1, turn. Single crochet in back loop only for every row.
Repeat until the piece is square (about 20 rows).
Fold the square in half. Single crochet the two side seams together.
For the strap: Chain 60, then slip stitch back down the chain to reinforce it. Sew the strap to the top edges.
Why Crochet Bag is Amazing:
This crochet bag is practically indestructible. Use it as a beach bag, a laundry bag, or a toy hauler. It handles heavy loads like books or canned goods without breaking because t-shirt fabric is stronger than regular yarn. It is also incredibly soft on the shoulder.
Advanced Ideas:
Once you master the basic tarn bag, experiment. Use white and red shirts to make a patriotic bag. Cut strips unevenly for a "rag rug" texture. Add a button made from an old bottle cap. Line the inside with an old pillowcase for a more polished look.
This project turns waste into wealth. Every time you use your t-shirt crochet bag, you are keeping plastic and fabric out of the landfill. And because the materials were free, you will feel bold experimenting with colors and shapes. Grab those old concert tees and start cutting. Your new favorite bag is waiting inside your closet.
