Sự kiện trung tâm: Nhà sáng lập OASIS qua đời và để lại di chúc: Ai tìm đủ 3 chiếc chìa khóa ẩn giấu sẽ được thừa kế toàn bộ gia tài khổng lồ và quyền kiểm soát tối cao thế giới ảo này.
Phe phản diện: Tập đoàn công nghệ IOI. Chúng dùng tiền bạc, vũ lực và thuê hàng ngàn game thủ cày thuê để chiếm đoạt OASIS nhằm mục đích thương mại hóa. Chúng sẵn sàng ám sát người chơi ngoài đời thực để trừ khử đối thủ
