BUFFALO DNACE BY: CORNELIA MEGS
Is a story about two different sides that are sworn enemies for no apparent reason but that there fathers hated each other. Two boys from different tribes and places come together and help each other, and in that they break the enemy barrier between them.

CHANUKA: A curious boy from Ojibway tribe in the forest that travels in an unknown area of the river.

The Ojibway boy is floating down a stream in a canoe near the Dakota tribe land who live in the plains. As he is paddling through the stream, he comes up to a river and finds a very beaten boy lying under some bushes.
The hurt boy was from the Dakota tribe. The boy was tracking a moose but the moose ended up getting him. Chanuka was excited because he had a prisoner, but he took pity on him. He healed the Dakota boy by wrapping his wounds in leaves and bark. They didn’t talk at all until the Dakota Indian told Chanuka his name, Neosho. By the third day Neosho was able to walk and move by himself so, they got into the canoe and Neosho was dropped off near his camp. Even though Chanuka could’ve taken Neosho in as a prisoner, he saved him and returned him to his tribe.
nstead of punishing Chanuka because he left unauthorized, he was sent again to spy on the Dakotas. The Ojibway chief was planning an attack if the Dakota’s food supply was low. Chanuka got there and stayed low for awhile. The Dakota tribe had a lot of food for the winter, so there will be no attack, but there was a problem. The Dakota’s were starting their ritual, the buffalo dance. Chanuka was stuck, so Neosho gave him the horse hide. The Ojibway boy was able to get through the dance and swim over the lake. Because the Dakota’s have a lot of food, the Ojibway won’t be able to attack them.

The two boys met again a crossed the river. They both needed some kind of proof of them each going to each others tribes. They exchanged moccasins; Chanuka’s shoes were puckered and had porcupine quills when Neosho’s were large and loose. The moccasins were put on poles in each tribe to show the trust between the two friends.

Chanuka and Neosho both came from different tribes, but come together as friends and help each other with each others issues. By helping each other, they break the barrier between the Ojibway and the Dakota tribes.
