Bunga Edelweiss (sering juga disebut bunga abadi) dijadikan lambang dari cinta sejati.
Disebut bunga abadi karena terdapat hormon yang bisa mencegah kerontokan bunga.
Nama Edelweis berasal dari kata Edel (berarti suci) dan Weiss (berarti putih) dalam bahasa Jerman.
Nama ilmiah : Leontopodium (artinya cakar singa)
,diambil dari bahasa Yunani Leon (Singa) dan Podion (kaki).
Karakteristik :
- memiliki keunikan tumbuh di pegunungan terjal di ketinggian 2000-2900 meter dari permukaan laut.
- daun dan bunganya ditutupi oleh bulu bulu halus berwarna putih. Setiap kuntum dapat terdiri dari lima mahkota.
Bulu-bulu halus pada tumbuhan ini berfungsi sebagai pertahanan terhadap suhu dingin pegunungan, kekeringan dan radiasi sinar ultra violet.
- bunga berwarna kuning selebar 5mm dikelilingi kelopak yang membentuk bintang, mekar di antara bulan Juli hingga Sept setiap tahunnya.
- Secara tradisional digunakan sebagai obat untuk mengobati penyakit perut dan pernafasan.
Edelweis termasuk salah satu bunga pegunungan Eropa yang paling terkenal.
Edelweis eropa (Leontopodium alpinum) dapat tumbuh mencapai ketinggian 3-20 cm di tingginya pegunungan.
Edelweis Jawa (Anaphalis javanica, Javanese edelweiss) adalah tumbuhan endemik zona alpina/montana di berbagai pegunungan tinggi Nusantara.
Tumbuhan ini dapat mencapai ketinggian 8 m dan dapat memiliki batang sebesar kaki manusia walaupun umumnya tidak melebihi 1 m.
Tumbuhan ini sekarang dikategorikan sebagai tumbuhan langka dan masuk dalam daftar merah International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources disingkat IUCN dengan status Kritis.
