Sometimes an orphaned lamb, called a bum lamb, may be given to a ewe whose own lamb has died. The herder will skin the dead lamb and place the pelt on the orphan for a couple of days until the mother ewe adopts the orphaned lamb as her own. Or perhaps the herder might sprinkle talcum powder on both the orphaned lamb and ewe. The scent of the powder will disguise the strangeness of the lamb until the mother adopts it.
