Merupakan kependekan dari 'animation' dalam Bahasa Inggris. Jadi anime masih berarti animasi secara luas hanya anime adalah sebutan spesifik untuk animasi dari Jepang.
•Gambar untuk anime dapat dibuat dengan tangan ( traditional art ) maupun dengan teknologi komputer (modern art).
•Termasuk karya seni rupa terapan, karena para animator lebih mengutamakan untuk mengedepankan unsur intrinsik dan unsur ceritanya.
Sering kali disebut 'Seniman Bayangan'. sayangnya gaji animator agak kecil dibandingkan kerja keras, sehingga tidak jarang mereka lebih memilih untuk tidak bekerja sebagai animator secara profesional.
•Disebabkan: penyebaran/pembajakan anime ( dan manga, sebutan untuk komik buatan Jepang ) secara luas dan secara gratis terutama di internet, yang seringkali bahkan di lakukan oleh perusahaan yang bersangkutan untuk mempopulerkan anime tersebut.
•Akibatnya: para animator sulit untuk mendapat keuntungan penuh dari anime yang mereka buat.
Anime yang pertama kali mencapai kepopuleran yang luas:
1.Astro Boy (1963) karya dari Osamu Tezuka.
•Anime semakin berkembang baik dari segi gambar maupun CG dan efek-efek tambahan lainnya.
•Alur cerita juga berkembang jadi lebih menarik dan seru. Khusus di Jepang, masyarakatnya dari segala umur cukup antusias menonton anime, menganggap anime sebagai bagian dari kehidupan mereka.
•Teknologi CG berperan besar dalam anime. Teknologi visual komputer juga berperan penting untuk mempermudah pembuatan anime.
