Geosphere
Carbon is an important component of all living organisms. When a large number of dead organisms are buried underground, they can turn into fossil fuels over long periods. Fossil fuels include coal, oil, and natural gas. The burial and conversion can occur on land or beneath the oceans and seas. The image shows oil found beneath Earth’s surface.
Atmosphere
CO2 is a component of the atmosphere. Plants use CO2 for photosynthesis. However, living organisms replenish it through their respiration. CO2 is a greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere. The trapped gas doesn’t allow much of the Sun’s heat that reaches Earth to return to space. Earth’s temperatures remain warm and suitable for life because of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Let’s see why CO2 is known as a greenhouse gas.Hydrosphere
CO2 dissolves in water even at room temperature. Large amounts of CO2 dissolve in the seas and oceans (process B in the image). So, carbon makes up part of the water in all water bodies on Earth.
Water-based plants use dissolved CO2 for photosynthesis. During respiration, aquatic life releases CO2 back into the water. When the Sun heats the waters of the oceans and seas, the water releases CO2 into the atmosphere.
This gas exchange takes place between the atmosphere and the hydrosphere, and carbon is returned to the atmosphere (process A in the image).
