DEFINISI
Flamingo adalah spesies burung berkaki jenjang yang hidup berkelompok. Ciri yang dimiliki burung ini adalah lehernya dan kaki yang panjang, juga memiliki paruh yang bengkok ke bawah seperti sendok terbalik, berfungsi untuk mencari makanan dalam lumpur. Burung ini ditemukan di belahan bumi barat dan timur, namun lebih banyak terdapat di belahan timur. Ukuran flamingo dewasa bekisar antara 30-50 inci. dengan lebar sayap sekitar 60inci.
KARAKTERISTIK
Flamingo senang berdiri dengan satu kaki. Saat sedang berdiri satu kaki, artinya Flamingo sedang bersantai.
Flamingo muda keluar dari telur dengan warna abu-abu, namun flamingo dewasa memiliki warna bervariasi dari merah muda hingga merah cerah. Flamingo dewasa bisa memiliki warna merah muda, karena bakteri akuatik dan beta karoten yang terkandung dalam makanan mereka.
Flamingo yang makan cukup memiliki warna yang lebih cerah dan menarik sehingga mudah dalam menarik pasangannya. Sedangkan flamingo pucat atau putih umumnya tidak sehat.
MAKANAN
Udang dan alga biru-hijau adalah sumber beta karoten yang umum didapatkan flamingo.
RENTAN HIDUP
Flamingo dapat hidup sekitar 20-30 tahun di alam bebas. Tetapi, flamingo yang tinggal di penangkaran dapat bertahan hidup lebih dari 50 tahun.
