clarisse represents curiosity, she enjoys the little things in life. while others didn't care clarisse stands out because she cares about people and likes to figure out who they are. she liked to listen the the stories her uncle would tell her on how it was a long time back then.

Fire represents control the the firefighters have over the citizens. They use the fire to destroy books because many of the books were offensive, others would make people smart. So by having control and not letting anyone read any books no one would got offended and everyone would be the same. It was used as a form of destruction that made it easier to control the society.

Water represents cleansing and letting go of his old self. By cleansing himself hes freeing himself form all the sins he did in the past. Being free from the past can allow people to start a new life a better way than in the past.

Kerosene represents responsibility and guilt of destroying peoples lives. He can never wash off what hes done. The smell of kerosene is all the actions hes done to destroy books that stayed stuck with him over time. It is the daily reminder of what they do everyday and it prevents them from questioning what they do.
