Mexican Cession-1848
-The Mexican Cession caused arguments over the expansion of slavery into the west, and this idea split parties and diluted the votes of the Democrats, which allowed Taylor to win the election.
Election of 1848-1848
-The Taking Of California Caused A Find Of Gold
Gold Rush-1849
-The New States Caused Fight Over Slave/Free, Which Caused Compromise
Fugitive Slave Act-1850
-The Fugitive Slave Act allowed Southerners to capture African Americans from the North, even if they were free, which influenced Beecher's writing in Uncle Tom's Cabin.
Uncle Tom's Cabin-1852
-The book helped invoke more Northerners and abolitionists to rise against slavery, which caused more of a separation between the supporters and dissenters of slavery. This growing tension, along with the passing of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, caused Bleeding Kansas.
Bleeding Kansas-1855
-The Kansas controversy inspired Charles Sumner to give a speech, singling Andrew Butler in a verbal attack, which incited his nephew to attack Sumner with a cane.
Caning of Charles Sumner-1856
-The caning caused many Southerners to rejoice, for they saw the nephew's act as defending slavery. This further enforced the support of slavery, which caused the Dred Scott case to vote him still a slave.
Dred Scott Decision-1857
-When Lincoln prompted Douglas to explain the relationship between the Dred Scott decision and popular sovereignty, Douglas stayed committed to popular sovereignty, which included stopping the expansion of slavery. This went against the Dred Scott decision, which became known as the Freeport Doctrine.
Freeport Doctrine-1858
-The debates only led to more unrest about slavery, and the positions held about slavery only became more radical. This increasing unrest led John Brown to lead the Harper's Ferry Raid.
Harper's Ferry Raid-1859
