ağ kaynaklarının paylasımını kaynakların yönetimini giris ve paylasım yetkilerini iletişim protokollerini ve yapısal görevlerini üslenirler.ağ sistemlerini yöneten bilgisayarlara sunucu adı verilir.bu sunucu üzerine çalışan tüm ağı yönetebilme kapasitesine sahip özel olarak geliştirilen işletim sistemine sunucu işletim sistemi(NOS)adı verilir.
