Roaring Twenties- time when many people defied Prohibition, indulged in new styles of dancing and dressing, and rejected many traditional moral standards.
Demobilization- process of standing down a nation's armed forces from combat-ready status
Disarmament- the reduction or withdrawal of military forces and weapons.
Red Scare- The rounding up and deportation of several hundred immigrants of radical political views by the federal government in 1919 and 1920
Sacco and Vanzetti- Italian immigrants and anarchists, were executed for murder by the state of Massachusetts in 1927 on the basis of doubtful ballistics evidence . For countless observers throughout the world, Sacco and Vanzetti were convicted because of their political beliefs and ethnic background
Warren Harding- was the 29th president of the United States from March 4, 1921, until his death in 1923
Normalcy- the condition of being normal; the state of being usual, typical, or expected.
Fordney-McCumber Act- law that raised American tariffs on many imported goods to protect factories and farms
Dawes Plan- a plan to ensure payments of reparations by Germany after World War I, devised by an international committee headed by Charles Gates Dawes and put into effect in 1924.
League of Nations- An international organization established after World War I under the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles
Washington Naval Conference- a military conference called by U.S. President Warren G. Harding and held in Washington, D.C., from 12 November 1921 to 6 February 1922.
Four-Power Treaty- treaty signed by the United States, Great Britain, France and Japan at the Washington Naval Conference on 13 December 1921.
Kellogg-Briand Pact- a 1928 international agreement in which signatory states promised not to use war to resolve "disputes or conflicts of whatever nature
Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom- a non-profit non-governmental organization working "to bring together women of different political views and philosophical and religious backgrounds determined to study and make known the causes of war and work for a permanent peace"
Consumerism- the protection or promotion of the interests of consumers.
Installment buying- Purchasing a commodity over a period of time. The buyer gains the use of the commodity immediately and then pays for it in periodic payments
Tariffs- a tax or duty to be paid on a particular class of imports or exports.
Teapot Dome- a government scandal involving a former United States Navy oil reserve in Wyoming that was secretly leased to a private oil company in 1921; became symbolic of the scandals of the Harding administration.
Neutrality Acts- laws passed in 1935, 1936, 1937, and 1939 to limit U.S. involvement in future wars
Calvin Coolidge- A political leader of the early twentieth century. A Republican, he rose to prominence as governor of Massachusetts when he broke a strike by policemen in Boston
Herbert Hoover- A political leader of the twentieth century, who was president from 1929 to 1933
Supply-side economics- macroeconomic theory that argues economic growth can be most effectively created by lowering taxes and decreasing regulation
Isolationism- policy of remaining apart from the affairs or interests of other groups, especially the political affairs of other countries
