Στην εποχή των Βίκινγκ (9ο-11ο σεντ.), Υπήρχαν τέσσερις κύριες θεότητες,
με τους πρώτους θεούς να θυμούνται ως μικρές θεότητες
και άλλα υπερφυσικά όντα διαφορετικής σημασίας.

Οι σκανδιναβικη θεοί είναι τριών διαφορετικών τύπων:
Aesir - οι θεοί της φυλής , που αντιπροσωπεύουν την βασιλεία,
την τάξη, τη χειροτεχνία κλπ. (Συμπεριλαμβανομένου του Odin και Thor)
Vanir - θεοί της γονιμότητας της γης και των δυνάμεων της φύσης
(συμπεριλαμβανομένων των Freyr και Freyja)
Jotnar - γιγαντοί θεοί που βρίσκονται σε συνεχή κατάσταση πολέμου με τους Aesir
και αντιπροσωπεύουν χάος και καταστροφή
Η νορβηγική θρησκεία δεν είχε μια ενοποιημένη αντίληψη για τη μετά θάνατον ζωή.
Κάποιοι μπορεί να έχουν πιστέψει ότι οι πεσμένοι πολεμιστές θα πήγαιναν στη Βαλχάλα
για να ζήσουν ευτυχώς με τον Οντίν μέχρι τον Ραγκαρόκ, αλλά φαίνεται απίθανο
να είναι αυτή η πεποίθηση ευρέως διαδεδομένη. Άλλοι φαινόταν να πιστεύουν
ότι δεν υπήρχε μετά θάνατον ζωή. Σύμφωνα με το "Hávamál",
κάθε ατυχία ήταν καλύτερη από το να καίγεται σε μια τεράστια πυρά,
επειδή ένα πτώμα ήταν ένα άχρηστο αντικείμενο.
