We've all written code we didn't like and wanted to refactor, but where do you start? What should you be looking for first and what changes should you be making?
In this live coding talk, I'll be applying a set of rules and heuristics I've developed over the years to attack a refactoring in a systematic, T-1000-like fashion. We'll work through a few examples and turn some crappy code that is sensitive to change into code that is robust and easy to maintain.
Some things we'll cover will include the importance of tests when refactoring, the Law of Demeter, Object Calisthenics, tricks for naming classes, "Tell, Don't Ask", sneaky forms of duplication and polymorphism.
