Name the four levels of structure of proteins and explain what each level is responsible for adding to the protein structure.
1. The sequence of amino acids is the primary structure.Proteins can act as enzymes, which are catalysts that help reactions happen faster, or more so help break things down.
2. The hydrogen bonds that form are the secondary structure. Proteins can give structure and support to the body. Keratin is a protein helps give structure to the hair, and collagen helps give structure to the skin.
3. Tertiary structure- When the amino acids start to bend and fold. Proteins can help provide storage and transport materials within the body. For example, ferritin is a protein that stores excess iron. Hemoglobin is a protein that transports oxygen throughout the red blood cells.
4. Quaternary structure- the way that tProteins can help prevent diseases. Antibodies are proteins that the body produces to protect the body whenever it detects troublesome cells.
